Local lunch clubs a lifeline for many

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Meg Munn MP recently visited Voluntary Action Sheffield to meet Lunch Clubs’ support staff, Maria Flude and Keith Levy.  They outlined the support provided to local lunch clubs and plans for the future as they adapt to changing local needs.  There are around 100 lunch clubs in Sheffield and 2,500 people go to a lunch club in the city every week.

Meg said:

“For many people the weekly lunch club is a lifeline, providing much needed contact and showing that someone cares. I’ve visited many lunch clubs across my constituency, and without exception the people who go value not just the food but the chance to meet up with friends.

Lunch clubs are important to our local communities, and they would not exist without the work of hundreds of volunteers who make a real difference to thousands of older people in Sheffield.”

Sheffield’s lunch clubs are supported by a network of 750 volunteers, who give up their time to help organise and run them. If you would like to volunteer for a lunch club or you want to learn more about the support available visit:  http://www.vas.org.uk/lunch_club_support
