Local support for people with Dementia

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Local MP Meg Munn recently visited Hurlfield View Resource Centre to see some of the fantastic work the staff do with people suffering from dementia. The managers, Chris Scott and Sarah Burley, explained to Meg the various services available and were particularly keen to highlight the importance of engaging dementia sufferers in a social care, as opposed to hospital environment.

During a tour of the building Meg met some of the staff and thought it was clear how well everyone had settled at Hurlfield following a recent service reconfiguration. Chris and Sarah told Meg of the exciting plans to expand the centre, with work expected to commence in January a much needed investment given the ever increasing number of people being diagnosed with dementia.

Hurlfield View provides both day care and community services, and tries to offer flexibility and support to individuals with dementia in accessing a much wider range of social activities. The centre also has 16 on-site beds, focused on providing an emergency service.

Meg was delighted to learn of Hurlfield’s links with other local groups and Arbourthorne Primary with the pupils holding a yearly carol service at the centre.

Meg said:

“Hurlfield View is a brilliant example of a successful service for dementia sufferers. The care and compassion of the staff was clear to see and it was great to see how much more was on offer than simply medical treatment and how effective an approach grounded in social care can be. I look forward to revisiting again once the building work has been completed and seeing the excellent new facilities.”
