Challenges for adult social care in Sheffield

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently met Moira Wilson, Interim Director of Care and Support at Sheffield City Council to discuss the current challenges faced in providing adult social care.

Since the coalition government were elected local authorities across the country have had a staggering 2.68 billion cut from their adult social care budgets, and in Sheffield it is clear that the effect of these cuts is beginning to bite. Meg expressed her concern that these funding issues may start to impact on the quality of care that many of her vulnerable constituents require.

Despite the precarious financial situation, Moira assured Meg that the council are working hard to ensure that those with substantial care needs are continuing to be supported. She also explained that they are working towards a closer integration with local health services, as Sheffield seeks to provide the best possible care.

As a campaigner for improved services for sufferers of dementia, Meg was delighted to learn that Sheffield is also taking steps towards becoming a ‘Dementia Friendly’ city.

Meg said:

“The savings that the council are forced to make as a result of the cuts by the government have placed adult social care services under immense pressure. Despite the difficulties, Moira and her team are working hard to ensure that this situation does not become an impossible one, and that care is provided to the highest possible standards.

With resources scarce, we now more than ever need a real focus on building community resilience and care which allows people to remain in their own homes.”
