Grace Food Bank for Lowedges, Batemoor and Jordanthorpe

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently visited a food parcel collection point at the Grace Food Bank, one of thirteen food banks now in operation across the city. It is a run by a community group and covers the Lowedges, Batemoor and Jordanthorpe areas.

The food bank provides food parcels to families and individuals who find themselves in short term financial crisis. It is run entirely by volunteers and supported by local churches, receiving no government or local authority funding.

Volunteer Becky Marshall told Meg that the food bank now provides around 400 worth of food per week for vulnerable people. Meg was impressed to hear about the support from the local community, with many people providing generous donations and a number of volunteers coming forward to help.

Meg said:

“It is scandalous that almost half a million people in the UK face such hardship that they have to rely on food banks. Selfless, hardworking, community organisations like the Grace Food Bank do fantastic work to provide support for families when they really have nowhere else to go.”
