Meg Visits TA Annual Camp

Thursday, September 23, 2004

Whilst Sheffield’s local TA unit were away in Edinburgh for their annual two-week camp they invited their local MP and city dignitaries to visit. The 38th Signal Regiment Territorial Army unit, based at Manor Top, use the camp to train their signallers in a variety of different and difficult situations, such as experienced in emergencies and natural disasters. Meg Munn MP and Councillor Mike Pye and his wife Josephine, Sheffield’s Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, were very impressed with the skill and professionalism of the signallers.

Meg commented “Most of the regiment are volunteers and do this work in their spare time. In civilian life they might work in the stores, be accountants or computer specialists, in the TA they value the experience and are providing essential backup to our armed forces for both peace time and conflict situations.”  Currently a number of Sheffield’s Territorial Army are serving in Iraq and Kosovo.

The TA are highly trained in operating communication systems that would be needed after a nuclear attack, but these days they are more likely to be called upon to help following a local disaster or to provide back up to the regular army or emergency services. Disasters such as the recent floods at Boscastle can easily disable normal communication like phone lines just when they are needed the most.

Its not all hard work, there’s a strong sense of comradeship and the odd funny incident. Recently a recovery vehicle was out of action for several weeks when a family of pied wagtails were discovered nesting inside. The RSPCA ruled that they could not be disturbed until the chicks had left the nest, and barring disasters the TA were happy to oblige.

The Picture shows Meg, the Lord Mayor and members of the TA.
