Games Britannia Live in the city

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently visited the Games Britannia festival held in and around the Winter Gardens and the Millennium Galleries. Described as a festival of games, invention, creativity and play it encourages children and young people to learn more about computers and digital programming.

As in previous years there were many hands on activities, as well as workshops focused on particular subjects. Led by inspirational Rotherham teacher Mark Hardisty, the event highlights not just the opportunities for future employment but also some of the ways in which technology will change and improve our lives.

Sheffield has a strong presence in the video games industry and many companies were present at the event, and young start-up companies were demonstrating their new products. Also at the event were innovative companies from throughout the UK. Meg was particularly impressed with the work of Special Effect who design technology and games for disabled people. Mick Donegan, who founded the charity, demonstrated the available technology to her.

Meg said:

"I was amazed by the work of Special Effect. After only a short period of practice I was able to play a video game that involved driving a car using just my eyes.

Seeing disabled young people playing games with their able bodied siblings was truly inspirational. This technology is not only making an enormous difference to recreational activities but it can help disabled person more easily access the internet.

Congratulations to Mark and all those involved in putting the very successful Games Britannia event together."
