Furthering IT skills

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Local MP Meg Munn recently visited a free drop-in IT session suitable for complete beginners with expert advice at hand if needed, held by the Heeley Development Trust. Meg met regular attendees Barry and Joan Parkin who said that the support has enabled them to carrying on using the computers when problems arise instead of having to give up as would be the case at home.

Many of the people taking advantage of the computer sessions use the time to job search on the internet, study towards qualifications or further their own IT skills. One of the constituents using the service commented that since the IT services have been removed from local job centres this is now his only access to the internet for job searches.

Drop-in sessions are from 9am to 12pm on Tuesdays and 1pm to 4pm on Wednesdays. There is also a jobs advice session on Tuesdays between 1pm and 4pm where local volunteers assist with job searches and updating CVs. These sessions are very popular so must be booked in advance.

Meg said:

“It is great to see local support for constituents who may not be the most confident computer user or even have a computer. I was pleased to see the IT session being taken advantage of people of different ages, with all them really positive about the sessions.”
