Manifesto at Lowedges Fire Station

Monday, March 23, 2015

Meg Munn MP recently visited Lowedges Fire Station to meet Chief Fire Officer Jamie Courtney. He wanted to brief the local MP on the financial circumstances of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) relative to other Fire and Rescue Authorities and highlight the growing funding inequalities between services across the sector.

To address these issues SYFR is calling for:

        Local discussions on mutually-agreed mergers or sharing arrangements between Fire Services, not forcible mergers;

        The establishment of a Government department responsible for the three blue-light emergency services;

        Government to protect the Fire Service in future rounds of spending cuts;

        A complete review of the current fire funding formula;

        Greater freedom for Fire Authorities to vary Council Tax precepts without the need to resort to costly referendums;

        An end to the current pensions dispute as soon as possible;

        A recognition that the Fire Service can help to reduce the demand on over-stretched health services.

Meg spoke to firefighters who had recently returned from an incident and then had a tour of the facilities at Lowedges. She was pleased to hear about the recent SYFR Women’s Development Conference which focused on the importance of having a diverse fire and rescue service.

Meg said:

“Our firefighters are continuing to do a fantastic job despite recent budget cuts. I am worried that if these cuts continue the impact will really start to be felt on the front line of our fire service. This is an issue I will be raising with the government Minister. ”
