Meg visits Painted Fabrics and Church of the Nazarene Luncheon clubs

Tuesday, July 29, 2003

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative Party MP for Sheffield Heeley always enjoys Parliamentary Recess because it gives her the opportunity to visit many local groups in the community.

Last week, among many visits and engagements, she was delighted to visit two groups of older people. She visited the Painted Fabrics Agewell group on Little Norton Drive and the Nazarene Church luncheon club, Fitzroy Road, Heeley Green.

Meg told us

"The visit to Agewell at Painted Fabrics was great, they were being entertained by a pianist with music hall, films and war time melodies and songs. Afterwards we had a nice chat over a cup of tea. The Nazarene luncheon club was lovely, and I was surprised to see that almost everyone seemed to be over 90 years old. They have an excellent hot meal and then sing hymns from the Sankey hymn book, with one of their number playing the piano. It’s obvious from my visits that many older people appreciate the chance to get together and have a meal or a chat, they really enjoy the company. I know how important it is whether you live at home or in an elderly person's home to go out and meet your friends. These clubs are happening all over the city and they are a real and valuable life-line for many older people. We should all be very grateful for the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers who keep them going."
