Financing Gender Equality for Development and Democracy

Monday, June 11, 2007

As Minister for Women and Equality, Meg attended the Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers meeting nr Kampala, Uganda. This gathering, held every three years, had as its central theme ‘Financing Gender Equality for Development and Democracy’. These regular meetings are part of the strategy to promote gender equality among member states and contribute to the global gender policy.

The meeting represents the largest grouping of Ministers responsible for women’s affairs within the international arena. It is a forum that discusses critical issues and approaches and provides leadership and expertise to promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment throughout the Commonwealth. They provide opportunities for Ministers, senior officials, civil society organisations, and partner agencies to discuss critical issues in advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality, and to contribute to Commonwealth and global agenda-setting processes.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt. Hon. Don McKinnon, is responsible for the general organisation of the meeting, which is serviced by the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

The key objectives of the Commonwealth Ministers meeting were to:

  • provide a platform for the Commonwealth to share experiences and deepen the current global debates around financing gender equality,

  • review global trends in gender equality as they impact upon the Commonwealth,

  • review implementation of the Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality (2005-2015), and

  • agree positions regarding financing gender equality, to be presented both to the Finance Ministers meeting in September 2007 and the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting 23-25 November 2007.
